Early cane harvesting.

Whether done by enslaved or free workers, the growing and harvesting of sugarcane in St. Charles depended on the physical strength of men, women, mules, and oxen for more than 100 years. One of the first cane loaders was invented and sold in Killona. Notice, however, that the wagon was still pulled by mules. This advertisement was placed in the Louisiana Planters and Sugar Manufacturer’s Journal in 1906.
