Mississippi River Baptisms
The Mississippi River was the gathering place for many church baptisms. Church members and others from the community would gather on the levee to view the moving ceremonies. The river waters were used as a major part of the ritual or tradition carried on for decades. Candidates for baptism were submerged in the water by their pastor and other members of the congregation.
